EAST® Initiative Announces Keynote Speaker for Annual Conference

Little Rock, Ark.  (Jan. 15, 2010) -- The EAST Initiative is pleased to announce the keynote speaker for its annual Conference, which will be held March 2-4, 2010 at the Hot Springs Convention Center in Hot Springs, Arkansas. Dr. Tom W. Kimbrell, Commissioner of Education for the Arkansas Department of Education will speak at the conference awards banquet on Wednesday, March 3.

Dr. Kimbrell is a lifelong Arkansas educator who was appointed to be Commissioner of Education for the State of Arkansas by Governor Mike Beebe and the Arkansas State Board of Education in September 2009. About his role as Commissioner, Dr. Kimbrell says: "Since I began my career in public education 25 years ago, I have set as my personal and professional goal to make a difference for the greatest number of children in this state. As Commissioner, I can work with the Governor, the educational community and business leaders to positively impact educational opportunities for children."

Kimbrell served as executive director of the Arkansas Association of Educational Administrators for four years prior to coming to the Arkansas Department of Education. Before that, he was superintendent for the North Little Rock and Paragould school districts. He has also worked as a director of fiscal services in the Paragould School District, as assistant principal in the Corning School District, and as a teacher and coach for the Paragould and Pocahontas school districts.

Kimbrell earned his doctorate in education and his master's of science in education both from Arkansas State University, and he earned his bachelor's of science in education from the University of Arkansas at Fayetteville.

He is married to Tina Kimbrell, and they live with their two children in Cabot.

The annual EAST Conference brings together approximately 2000 students, facilitators, industry professionals, supporters and other guests to celebrate participating schools' work from the past year. It is the highlight of the year for EAST schools nationwide, featuring a trade show-like environment and the gala awards banquet.

EAST® (Environmental and Spatial Technology) is an educational model that provides new ways of learning for modern students. EAST focuses on student-driven service projects accomplished with the use of cutting-edge technology. EAST schools are equipped with classrooms containing state-of-the-art work-stations, servers, software and accessories, including GPS/GIS mapping tools, architectural and CAD design software, 3D animation suites, virtual reality development and more. Students identify problems in their local communities and then find ways to use these tools to develop solutions.
